Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948) was an Indian leader activist and political ethicist. He employed nonviolent resistance. This led the successful campaign for India's independence. He inspired movements for civil rights and freedom worldwide. The honorific Mahātmā means "great-souled". It is now used globally. Gandhi trained in law and spent years in South Africa before returning to India.
