Richard Wagner (1813–1883) was a significant German composer theatre director and essayist. He is chiefly known for his operas often called "music dramas". Wagner wrote both the libretto and music for his stage works. He revolutionized opera with his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk or "total work of art".
